BOOK SUBMISSION: Long Ago
This book is 20cm long and 11cm wide and the binding appears to be made of cardboard. On the cover, there is a small illustration of Sappho surrounded by leaves on the binding that accompanies the title. This edition was published as a part of the Bibelot Series and only 925 copies were published. The edition bears an inscription from Michael Field to Emily Bottomley, the owner of the book before it came to UVic’s special collections (as indicated by a sticker that reads “From the Emily and Gordon Bottomley Bequest”). The inscription is dated “June 5, 1908.” On the title page, there is a pressed flower secured with tape in three spots along the flower’s stem. The book has one minimal illustration, which is unsigned. A note at the back of the volume explains that both illustrations (the cover and frontispiece) are of Sappho. In total, there are sixty-eight poems in this book, and all of which are accompanied by lines from Sappho in Greek.
